History of earthquakes along the creeping section of the San Andreas fault, California, USA

چکیده
Creeping faults are difficult to assess for seismic hazard because they may participate in rupture even though likely cannot nucleate large earthquakes. The creeping central section of the San Andreas fault California (USA) has not participated a historical earthquake; however, earthquake ruptures nucleating locked northern and southern sections propagate through section. We used biomarker thermal maturity K/Ar dating on samples from Fault Observatory at Depth look evidence Biomarkers show many earthquakes with displacements >1.5 m near 3.5-m-wide patch fault. that ages decrease maturity, partial resetting occurs during coseismic heating. Therefore, measured provide maximum constraint age, youngest here younger than 3 Ma. Our results demonstrate host over longer time scales.

Variations of the velocity contrast and rupture properties of M6 earthquakes along the Parkfield section of the San Andreas fault
S U M M A R Y We investigate the seismic velocity contrast across the San Andreas fault (SAF) in the Parkfield area using fault zone head waves (FZHW) that propagate along the bimaterial fault interface and direct P waves. We systematically analyse large data sets of near-fault waveforms recorded by several seismic networks over the period 1984–2005. Clear FZHW are observed at many stations on ...

Slip in the 1857 and earlier large earthquakes along the Carrizo Plain, San Andreas Fault.
The moment magnitude (Mw) 7.9 Fort Tejon earthquake of 1857, with a approximately 350-kilometer-long surface rupture, was the most recent major earthquake along the south-central San Andreas Fault, California. Based on previous measurements of its surface slip distribution, rupture along the approximately 60-kilometer-long Carrizo segment was thought to control the recurrence of 1857-like earth...
متن کاملIrregular recurrence of large earthquakes along the san andreas fault: evidence from trees.
Old trees growing along the San Andreas fault near Wrightwood, California, record in their annual ring-width patterns the effects of a major earthquake in the fall or winter of 1812 to 1813. Paleoseismic data and historical information indicate that this event was the "San Juan Capistrano" earthquake of 8 December 1812, with a magnitude of 7.5. The discovery that at least 12 kilometers of the M...
